Pick up any newspaper, drive down any road, listen to any radio or watch any television and you will be exposed to some advertising message. For until people know about you or your business no matter how great your solutions (products or services) are they will still remain on the shelf and your pockets will still be empty.

Advertising comes from the Latin word "advertere" meaning "to turn more worth." In the traditional sense of the word, it means "the action of calling something to the attention of the public." (Webster's Seventh Collegiate Dictionary). However this word now usually suggests a paid marketing message.

For advertising is a marketing tactic as the purpose of marketing is two-fold:
 

  • Attract attention
  • Build the relationship

In today's very crowded global marketplace, you must advertise to get your message out to ensure business success. For many small business owners who do not have the funds of their competitors, they have migrated to social media where they can advertise almost for free in the sense it did not cost them any dollars up front. Of course, there is time involved in posting and monitoring the plethora of social networks.

Yet when businesses return to the roots of this word specific to turning more worth, they can reap incredible results (think business success) from the ability to increase sales to the capacity for building customer loyalty. This leads to the question of how does a business turn more worth?

Worth is a word that implies value. Now value is unique to each human being especially when they just exchange the results of their productivity efforts (money) to purchase the productivity efforts of others. If value was not unique to each individual, then we would all be:

  • Driving a Yugo
  • Eating at McDonalds
  • Shopping at Wal-Mart

Business success is quite dependent upon how much value management can integrate into its advertising message. For larger firms that have more resources they can hire marketing or advertising companies while many small business owners may have to engage in trial and error through their own experiences.

One strategy is to as Covey is so often quoted "Begin with the end in mind." What results can you embed into your advertising message be it words or graphics. Some research on Facebook behavior suggests postings with graphics and text outperform those with texts or video only.

In other words, pictures have more value than words alone. People hear words, but think in pictures. The more successful a business is in creating a value laden picture the greater likelihood of securing the marketing goal to make a friend, realizing the selling goal to increase sales and securing business success.
