Managing Your Personal Brand Visibility To Credibility

By Maria Duron

Nowadays, everyone uses Google. It's where people look for information and find answers to their questions. Google has become the new encyclopedia, where all the information you need can be accessed with one click. And this is why Google continues to be the number one site accessed on the World Wide Web.

Whether you're a business owner, a blogger, a potential client, a professional looking for work, a person selling products or services, or even a suitor, people are Googling you. They want to know about you - they want to know what is written about you, what information you have online, what businesses you own, whether you're married, and so on.

Built by association

This is why it has become very important in your personal branding campaign that you make sure that the first websites that appear when you do a Google Search of your name are the websites that you want your name to be associated with. This is basically your online reputation, the one that people can access when they search for information about you.

When was the last time you Googled yourself?

When was the last time you Googled other people? In today's world, when trust is so hard to give, with so many "experts" and "gurus" cropping up every day, it's become essential that you manage the information people are accessing about you.

You see, people still trust what they find in a search. They rely on Google Search heavily whenever they're looking for information online. According to Advertising Age, Google was the most trusted brand in America in 2008. In 2009, it ranked 7th worldwide according to Interbrand.

In fact, a recent survey done by Google and the Keller Fay Group, found conducting an online search was the first action that occurred after a word of mouth conversation (in which someone asked for a recommendation or a testimonial for something they needed).

So you want to make sure that when people do a search on your name, they get results that are accurate and informative. You don't want them to be misled, as this could mean the difference between getting a client or not, or being hired for a particular job or not.

Suspects, prospects and contacts do it.

Let's say you just applied for a job posting looking for a "reliable virtual assistant." The employer Googles your name before the interview, and your Facebook account appears, showing continuous pictures of you drunk and sloshed, partying all night. Your latest Tweet says, "Party all week long, woohoo!" Do you think this would factor in with his decision or not?

Fact is, it might. It just might make the difference between being hired or not.

Google is like your resume, a permanent record of your online life. Though you can easily just let it write the story about you, why not take charge of what websites come up whenever people search for your name?

If you have a personal website, for example, you would probably want that to rank high for a search of your name. If it isn't, you should build more links pointing to it so that it can rank higher in Google Search. You should also do more on-page SEO and make sure that more of your pages mention your name (this is as opposed to "I did this" and "I did that" which is often how many people write about themselves in profiles. And, mentioning your name two or three times will suffice).

Take advantage of Google Profile, which Google has launched to help you take control of the information people can access when they search for you. You can create a public profile with your first and last name, add your photo, and then provide additional information such as a bio, contact information, and the websites associated with you.

It's best to take advantage of Google Profile as soon as you can before someone else who has a similar name can own the spot. Google displays up to three profiles for every searched name.

Having a Google Profile with links to websites that best represent you can also help those sites rank better in search engines. These links have Google power.

If you'll go into the account settings for your Google account - even your Gmail account, click on your 'account setting", then find your 'dashboard' text link and click on that. You will probably need to enter your account password in again and then a page title Google Accounts with a headline of Dashboard will be available. Search each and every subheading to see what information Google has about you that you can manage immediately.

It's crucial that people find the real you

And if your personal website doesn't have your name in the domain, you should also consider putting up a website under a domain with your name in it. You could simply put up a simple one page website with some good information about you.

In these times, people are searching for you online, so you should make sure that what they find about you is as accurate and precise as it could possibly get. Don't let your websites get buried under a mass of results that don't really offer good information about you. For your personal brand campaign to work, it is crucial that when people Google you, they get the information you want them to have about you.
